Anchoring in Hope Town Harbour: What You Need to Know

Anchor Like A Local In Hope Town - The Abacos

If Hope Town is on your itinerary (and it should be), here’s how to anchor like a pro, navigate with insider know-how, and enjoy one of the most charming harbors in the Bahamas.

Hope Town is known for its candy-striped lighthouse and postcard-perfect views—but during peak season, it gets crowded. Here’s how to handle it:

  • Moorings over anchoring: The harbour has over 30 mooring balls available on a first-come, first-served basis. There are a variety of businesses that manage the moorings, so locals recommend securing one through Truman on VHF Channel 16, contacting Hope Town MarinaHope Town Canvas/Bike Shop, or Captain Jack’s.
  • Anchoring outside the harbor: If the moorings are full, you can drop anchor outside the channel entrance, near Eagle Rock, or for that crystal clear Abaco water—you can try in front of the Lighthouse, just watch your depth, the water here is a bit skinnier. Ideal holding is around 7–12 feet.
  • Tidal currents: Set a proper scope (7:1 or more) and double-check your swing radius. Currents here can shift with the tide.
  • Pro tip: Arrive before noon for your best shot at an open mooring, and bring cash for the fee (typically around $25–35 per night).

Local Hope Town Gem: Vernon’s Famous Island-Fresh Bread

After you’ve secured your mooring, dinghy to shore and head to Vernon’s Grocery for homemade cinnamon rolls and his famous island-fresh bread. Vernon might even share a few sea stories while you sip your morning coffee.
