Lobster Season In Abaco: Not To Be Missed

Every year, from August 1st through March 31st, The Abacos become the stage for one of the Bahamas’ most anticipated traditions — lobster season.

For divers, spearfishers & seafood lovers, this is the ultimate time to be here: crystal-clear waters, abundant crawfish & the promise of a fresh-caught feast sizzling on deck by sunset.

🦞 Diving Into Tradition

Lobster Season Abaco Bahamas: Aug1 - March 31

Unlike some other destinations, the Bahamas has no mini-season. When the gates open on August 1st, locals and visitors alike head for the reefs, where lobsters hide among coral heads and rocky ledges. Free diving and spearing are the traditional methods — no traps or scuba tanks allowed, which makes every catch an adventure.

🌟 Know Before You Go: Lobster Rules & Respect

The Bahamas takes sustainability seriously, and that’s what keeps lobster season thriving year after year. If you’re fishing as a visitor, be sure you read this list:

Limit:

  • Foreign vessels may have a maximum of 10 lobsters per vessel at any given time — not per person.

Egg-Bearing Lobsters:

  • Must be released immediately, ensuring the next generation thrives.

Size Matters:

  • The tail must measure at least 5.5 inches long to be harvested.

Permits & Work Rules:

  • Anything done for reward or remuneration is legally considered work. Non-Bahamians cannot guide, sell, or profit from fishing activities without a valid Bahamian work permit. Recreational harvest is the way to go — catch it, cook it & enjoy it yourself.
